Interesting 2007 Radiophonic Collage

I couldn’t attend last years Interesting conference due to a summer holiday clash but I did get to listen to all the recordings and marvel at the the range of subjects covered. There had been discussions around creating some kind of audio collage out of the recordings and now seemed like the right time to do it with Interesting 2008 fast approaching.

I listened through the hours of recorded material selecting words, phrases and found sound that took my fancy and then layered these over some original tape loops and electronic composition. At times it is a jumble of different voices and words fighting to be heard and then you get the occasional moment of clarity where one or two voices are allowed to break through.

I like how Russell Davies describes the collage. He says it makes the event sound like ” …a strange, secret, underground think-tank style event, as if The Rand Corporation had decided to reproduce the Festival Of Britain”. And I guess that is kind of what I wanted to achieve; a definite sense of wonder and mystery.

I had a lot of fun creating the collage and I hope it whets peoples appetites for Interesting 2008, at which I’ll be performing alongside Ken Hollings and lots of other interesting speakers.
